PALCUS Internship Program
The PALCUS Internship Program was established in 1994 to provide Portuguese-American students with work experience in their field of interest. Using its connections with government, civil-society and business leaders, PALCUS helps these students find internships that will give them the experience needed for success in a future career. Since its inception, more than 130 internship opportunities have been provided to university students.
This program provides both undergraduate and graduate Portuguese-American students with the opportunity to obtain invaluable work and career experience in government, business, and international organizations throughout the United States and Portugal.
Internships for 2009 were offered at embassies, consulate offices, U.S. senate and congressional offices, the PALCUS headquarters, large private companies, and other government agencies.
Previous interns have been given positions in Washington D.C., and at the hometown offices of Congressmen such as Devin Nunes, Patrick Kennedy, Barney Frank, Brian Bilbray, Lincoln Chafee, Steny Hoyer and George Radonovich. Some have interned at Portuguese consulates in Newark, New York City, Providence and San Francisco. Others have interned at the Luso-American Development Foundation in Lisbon, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon.
Interns receive a stipend to help cover their living expenses. Some of the internships also include travel and housing expenses.
We are currently accepting applications for the Summer of 2010. If you would like help in finding a specific internship throughout the year, please contact us at internships@palcus.org Please clickwww.palcus.org for the 2010 Internship Application. PALCUS Board Member, Attorney Cynthia Marques Russo, serves as the chair of the Internship Program.
PALCUS Mixers in California and other Activities
PALCUS recently collaborated with Portuguese consulting company, Business Leadership Consulting, and other Portuguese agencies, such as AICEP, to host a business mixer at the Autodesk Design Gallery in San Francisco, California. This event brought together Portuguese professionals in a wide range of industries including technology, science, engineering, architecture, law, energy, marketing, design, government and international business. This was the seventh event in a series of mixers PALCUS has hosted throughout the country in order to provide a venue for Portuguese professionals to network, share best practices and connect as a community.
In addition, the PALCUS Board of Directors has been busy on many fronts. We assisted AICEP with the business development trip of Dr. Basilio Horta to the East / West Coast and many of the members assisted with planning meetings, seminars, etc. PALCUS chairman, Fernando Rosa, attended the closing of the event with meetings with the Consul General, the Ambassador and other dignitaries in Boston .
PALCUS attended the Lecture/Reception of Dr. Rui Machette at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and the closing reception, given by the UMASS Chancellor. The event in honor of FLAD's outgoing chairman was attended by over 60 Portuguese-American professionals, including PALCUS' chairman.
PALCUS attended the annual dinner of the Portuguese School in Hartford, CT.
PALCUS participated in the meeting sponsored by the Conselho das Comunidades held in Newark, New Jersey.
We also continue to provide commentary to the media about various issues affecting our community such as the Madeira Relief fund, Census 2010, ESTA information, Congressman Patrick Kennedy not running for re-election, and the appointment of the new Ambassador to Portugal Allan Katz.
If you have an event where you'd like PALCUS to get involved, please email us at palcus@palcus.orgor call 202-466-4664.
