This year, PALCUS is raising funds for our scholarship program. Every year, PALCUS awards scholarships to students of Portuguese descent enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. These scholarships are a valuable community based resource for many students who use them for tuition, books and fees associated with obtaining their degrees of higher learning.

We have set a fundraising goal of $5,000 which will provide scholarships for 5 students in 2021. Please consider donating towards this cause. All donations are tax-deductible.

The PALCUS Make Portuguese Count campaign for the 2020 Census was one of only 1,000 national level partners of the US Census Bureau. MPC was also the ONLY NATIONAL PARTNER that represented the interests of the Portuguese-American community. As a result, PALCUS has been recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau! PALCUS thanks everyone involved with Make Portuguese Count in this 2 year long effort that is sure to deliver excellent results once the Census Data is delivered.  A special thanks to National Census Director, Marie Fraley for her tireless work with the MPC Captains, Affiliated Organizations and the entire Portuguese-American community!  We are Portuguese and we were counted! #PALCUS #MakePortugueseCount

Was That You: A story about the signs we receive from loved ones who have passed

As many of you know, PALCUS Chair, Angela Simoes,

and her husband lost their 9 month old son, Alexandre,

suddenly and unexpectedly in February of 2019. 

Since then, the Simoes family has received an

outpouring of support from the community. 

One of the biggest gestures of support has been the

establishment and funding of the Alexandre Antonio

da Costa Simoes Memorial Scholarship with PALCUS. 

This scholarship has been 100% funded by community

donations, and currently totals more than $20,000. 

To continue funding this scholarship, Angela has authored a book about the signs one receives from a loved one who is in Heaven.  The book titled "Was that you?" has been published on May 3rd, Alexandre's birthday and also International Bereaved Mother's Day, and will be available on Amazon only.  The proceeds from this book will fund the scholarship in Alexandre's memory. 

The book is written in the style of a children's book so that parents who have lost a child can read this book to them.

"It might sound like a strange concept, reading a book to a child who has passed, but for me, it's a way not only to stay connected with our son, but also to recognize that his spirit is still around us," said Angela.  "Also, as a mom, I want to do whatever I can for my children, and this is something I can do for him, and honor his memory."
